about
Raised under very different circumstances, Mercies May and Chris Caesar both spent their adolescence in the shadow of substance abuse. On a similar trajectory, each in their own way found themselves exposed
by their fathers' to music at a pivotal and formative moment in their chaotic lives. For both, the world seemed to reveal itself to them through a pair of headphones. May increasingly insular balanced his studies between the advanced thematic
lyricism of Pink Floyd and Elvis Costello with frequent detours into the undeniable groove of Classic Motown and Parliament; Meanwhile, Caesar for his part was drawn to the party vibe of seminole Hip Hop acts like
Digital Underground and Beastie Boys which acted as a gateway drug to harder edged electronica like electronic genre busters Prodigy. In music they had both
found a much needed balance in an otherwise chaotic
universe.
Taking it's name from an Oscar Wilde quote, the long gestating debut "Real Pain" is at once both a primer designed to introduce the duo’s unique sensibilities as well as a clear statement of refusal to to be relegated to
the one size fits all mentality that seems to overpower so much of the genre. In their first offering from Minneapolis label Fill in the Breaks, the group
offers up 5 sonically diverse tracks, largely sidesteping the use of samples, pulling liberally from a wide swath of genres and all the while maintaining a clear focus on songwriting as opposed to simple beat making. With "Real Pain for My Sham Friends" Literati announce themselves as formidable production duo easily on par with talent from either coast. "We could never be content simply walking in someone else's footsteps"
May says with a snarky laugh "we're far too preoccupied trying to figure out how to fly";
If "Real Pain" is any indicator of things to come, even that's only a matter of time.
